RE: FREE Gardening Workshops in Milton!

I attended the first session on berries and it was excellent. If you want to attend other workshops, I suggest you call rather than email, as I didn't get a confirmation and the lady said my email hadn't been relayed. There are some people who have signed up for all of the workshops and the numbers are limited, so be sure to secure a place if you are interested. I know several of the presenters from WVSU Extension and they are quite knowledgeable. Scott Byars, whom many of you know from 4-H, was the first presenter. Future presenters will be Dr. Barbara Liedl and Melissa Stewart. As part of the WVDA Specialty Crops Block Grant, WVSU Ext. wrote in a segment to cover door prizes. The door prizes are worth attending! There were nearly 80 ppl at the berry workshop. Why not learn how to turn your yard into an edible landscape? To hell with city ordinances!

City Attorney

I was sent a facebook notice to "like" Bob Leslie's facebook page...""Bob Leslie for Judge." It has no photos or details, but there are several comments that seem legitimate. In the event it isn't a joke, he may be running for O.C. Spaulding's Putnam Co. seat, since Hobby resigned after being diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease. Could be, Milton will be looking for a new attorney, if he wins. There would be a few people who would be happy about that.

Tiffani Webb, a Cabell Midland junior, is collecting homemade cookies and treats for the Barboursville Veterans Home. The goal is to deliver 101 containers to the 101 veterans residing at the home on Feb. 3. The cookies must be in disposable containers. Sugar-free options are needed. To contribute cookies or for more info, contact Tiffani @ goherdmiltonpanther@yahoo.com. I plan to do that today. There are men & women, young & old veterans at the home, and they are the most appreciative group of people you'll ever meet.

We found Aunt Bs new location a few days ago. We will be heading back for cookies and cupcakes as soon as they open.

There are several places to eat in Milton we like. Giovannis has the best pizza. Twist has handmade burger patties. Shonets has what we call comfort food. I like Ginos steak sandwiches. The mexican place is good.

My wife also found a new bakery in Lavalette next door to her hair place. I had their goods for desert today and it was good.

Last month, Milton utilities customers got a notice that Milton did not take water samples required for testing sometime back in June??? Anyway, months later, the city inserts a notice that our health could have been impaired as a result, but they didn't think so. I'm curious as to why the samples were not taken and submitted in a timely and responsible manner. I would think there is a schedule to go by and a number of the workers have been employed there for several years or more, so they should know the procedure. Who oversees all this? Gosh, I wonder if this would have happened under Kreth Sink's watch?

We found out a couple of days ago that Aunt Bs was closed. After a bit we learned they would reopen in or near their old location in Putnam County. I guess we will have to drive a bit further for lunch, cupcakes, and cookies.

I have no idea about the fee comparison. I do know that the bbq place in the old Village Inn never opened. They had a small trailer out front during the Pumpkin Festival but I'm not sure it was ever open for business.

I saw where Aunt B's is moving back to Hurricane. That didn't last long in Milton. Honestly, the visibility in that little plaza is bad. They are supposed to move to their old location on 34. They should do well there. Miltonians will just have to drive on up the road.

I'm also wondering what fees are like in Hurricane compared to Milton. With Wal-mart money coming in, do they have to charge other smaller businesses as much as Milton?

That barbeque place at the old Village Inn didn't last long either.

Maybe 2012 will be better for Milton.

I saw the peanuts as well. I also saw a city crew raking leaves on the south side of Rt.60. The street sweeper was there with a large hose to collect the piles of leaves. I would assume that the peanuts could be dealt with in the same manner, just drive over to the other side of R.60.

Just did a little Christmas shopping at the antique shop on Main St. Those peanuts are still EVERYWHERE! I would think at least one of our council members would suggest the city clean up the area. There are also paper cups and other litter. I don't know where the street sweeper was going yesterday, but the city needs to clean up the Rt. 60 area as that is the place that would leave a bad impression to visitors.

City Clean-Up

I followed the new expensive street sweeper out James River Tpk. yesterday. Where was it going and what was it doing? Was it going to city-owned Morris Memorial to sweep the roadway there? Was it being used to suck crap out of a sewer, which was one of the reasons the mayor said swayed them into purchasing the piece of equipment? Or, was it being used to sweep an out-of-city limits property as a favor to someone?

Too bad no one from the city noticed the foam peanuts that are all over town, down Main St., Rt. 60, the alley behind the Senior Center and all over the grass in the median. We can see just how useful that machine is. Will it pick up thousands of statically charged peanuts?f

RE: City Council Meetings

I attended the meeting last night. They had the second reading of the ordinance to annex Rose Terrace and the apartments below. Dee Adkins, manager of Rose Terrace, spoke about the economic impact the nursing home will have on the area and the reasons why they wanted to become a part of the city...for police protection, etc.

The city voted to purchase an inflatable screen and projector for $3,000+ to be able to show movies in April Dawn Park.

I was told that cameras to record illicit activity in the park are to be installed soon. The Greater Htgn. Parks and Recreation Board that oversee the park have the lights on a timer and they go off too early and the park is dark at night. That, too, is supposed to be fixed, but there is, admittedly, a HUGE problem at the park.

Residents of Abbott Lane complained about an unsafe rental property on their street and asked if the building inspector would come and look at the property and cite the owner.

Council held an executive session. When they returned, Phyllis Kirtley-Smith requested they give city employees an annual merit bonus. No amount was discussed

Does anyone have any idea what is going on with Bubas BBQ at the old Village Inn? It looked like they were getting ready to open and today all the signs are gone.

I am curious as to when the refurbishing of the jet is to be completed. I did a bit of research several months ago about the aircrafts origins and history. I also walked around the aircraft and was not impressed with the work that had been done. Besides the lousy paint job, the lettering was masked and has yet to be uncovered.

I would have thought that the auxillary of the U.S.Air Force would have taken a bit more pride in their attempt to spruce up an aircraft that not only represents them but also Milton. Maybe someone from the city should prod the Civil Air Patrol to finish the job.

I was told that the reason Huntington annexed a portion of I-64 and US 152 was to get coal severance tax money. As I remember it wasn't much and not worth all the problems it created.

I've been told, the owner of the apartments near Rose Terrace has been ordered to upgrade the pumps at his new facility at his expense. In return, the city will forfeit 5 years of B & O taxes.

I consider the source of this info to be reliable, but it is secondhand information, so I suggest you go to council or make inquiries on your own to unravel what is going on.

Again, secondhand...the reason for incorporating the two major roads outside town is to be able to obtain federal funds for patrol. HPD Capt. may know more about that...

RE: City Council Meetings

I talked myself out of going, too, HPD Capt., and now I regret that I did. I guess it was standing room only. The issue is the annexation of Rt. 60 and James River Tpk. Also, I'm presuming you now receive the Miltonian. It said that the city annexed Rose Terrace Nursing Home and the apartments below. It was stated that the apartment dwellers signed a petition to be annexed, and that is being disputed because they are not land owners. Benita has misplaced the petition, but will look for it. People in the housing developments along each road are concerned that it is only a matter of time before they, too, will be annexed into the city. I am glad, after my long lonely battle with Betty Sargent's administration, that others outside the city limits are seeing what buffoons were elected into office. I'm not keen on being annexed into the city limits, but, if they decide to do so, the upside is: we will have a much more intelligent pool of eligible candidates to consider for city offices. As usual, Mayor Canterbury, perhaps on the advice of the city attorney, offered one word answers to questions. When asked about any upcoming meetings, special or regularly scheduled, Canterbury told the individual they needed to stop by city hall every day and check the bulletin board. Phyllis K. Smith was not present, as if she knew the controversy brewing. Also...can anyone tell me why she rec'd mail via former Mayor Betty Sargent's Old Colony office? Is she or isn't she a resident of the City of Milton?

After wearing the scarlet letter for years, I am glad that others outside the city limits are seeing the light and are calling me w/their concerns. Perhaps, my reputation will be redeemed before I die.

I think it may be a matter of semantics, and it is probably true that the physical property was not sold. The cashier at Foodfair said "purchased," which is what I relayed, meaning Foodfair purchased the business. We asked the cashier at CIS "Foodfair" if they'd be selling beer, and she said it was unlikely.

New Trail System Proposed

This a a trail system that is proposed that would link Milton to Hurricane. Councilman Carl Harshbarger would be a good person to work on seeing this happen, since he is an avid runner. It would be a wonderful addition to our community. Hurricane mayor Scott Edwards in fully supportive.
